Beyond NMap use of Vulners and Flanscan (June 2021)

No/Low-cost vulnerability scanning

This presentation is focused on setting up a Linux device using Open Source (free) tools to conduct local area network vulnerability scanning.

It is a gateway to an opt-in Introduction to Linux Workshop. This follows the steps in the presentation, ideal for learning some Linux skills in a cybersecurity setting and especially beneficial if embarking on the LGA funded CISSP or CISM training. It is also the precursor for the “recon & web”, Kali / WifI audit presentations/courses.

It introduced those who attended to Open Source tools like NMap, Github Docker, as well as having to build their own Linux host and get to grips with the command-line interface.

One attendee commented, “The presentation and workshops have been easy to follow and implement, and as such we have fixed a number of things on our network and on our website, without having to wait for the annual pen tests. We are also now running various scans on a monthly basis to support CE.”

Over one hundred organisations and five full WARP meetings enjoyed this presentation before it was retired in June 2021. In addition, many went on to attend the workshop hosted by Burce, which was strongly based on this presentation as well as the follow on web app and website scanning.

In addition to the presentation, the workshop (course) notes are also supplied.

This presentation was retired in March 2021, it is currently being reviewed and re-written as an “Introduction to Open Source Security Tools”.
